[ D'Artagnan is in the middle of getting dressed - which is to say, he's wearing black trousers which are long enough to touch the tops of his feet (what's actually the point in that?) and a white shirt so crisp and close-fitting that he hasn't even attempted to put the cufflinks in yet.
He comes to hover at the edge of Clary's bunk without much ceremony, and after a moment's indecision about how to word this, he just comes out with it. ]
